Lockdown has touched all people and created new realities that are difficult and hard to adjust to.

A young person got in touch with us regarding the wellbeing of LGBTQ+ young people and although they did not wish to add comment for this article we thought it was important to highlight some of the difficulties LGBTQ+ young people may be facing that are being amplified by lockdown.

The struggle of being in an unsupportive environment, perhaps not being ‘out’ at home and so cut off from spending time with people they can be themselves with as well as the fact we know that a percentage of LGBTQ+ young people experience homelessness.

All of these factors would take a massive toll on anyone’s mental health and we recognise that in Oxfordshire provision for young people within the LGBTQ+ community is limited.

If you are suffering during this time please know that there are organisations you can reach out to and who are here to offer support. These include:

Stonewall

The Samaritans

24 hour NHS Mental Health Helpline

You can also access our sector map to identify youth organisations operating in your area that you can reach out to for support.

TOPAZ is a youth group for LGBTQ+ young people and allies and you can check for updates regarding meetings on their facebook page.

We believe it is important that in order for the right support to be provided to meet the individual needs of all young people we need to ensure all young people have the opportunity to share their experiences and have their voices heard. If you are a young person who identifies as LGBTQ+ and would like to have your voice heard we want to hear from you!
