This month we are celebrating International Volunteers Day (5th December) with the theme of ‘Together We Can‘. This year, arguably more so than ever before, has highlighted the importance of people who chose to give their time to support others and make a difference.

At Oxfordshire Youth we have a group of young people who make up our youth committee and we want to use this opportunity to celebrate them, the time they give and all that they have achieved over the last year.

Summer 2020: The Launch of a Brand-New Podcast

When the world went into lockdown in March, our young volunteers making up our youth committee wanted to create a platform where young people could have their voices heard. Sam, Darius, Teya, Ben, Jenny and Christian all worked together with Oxfordshire Youth staff to create from scratch ‘Are You Listening? The Oxfordshire Youth Podcast’; a podcast created by young people for young people to speak on and hear about issues that affect them.

Within two months, our young volunteers came up with a name, branding, planned episodes and worked out how to record, edit and distribute to popular podcast platforms. Sometimes meeting three times a week in the early stages they went above and beyond to make it the best it could be and have already (along with a number of young people from across Oxfordshire who have guest appeared) spoke on topics including mental health, relationships and race and racism.

Autumn 2020: A Virtual Celebration of Young People in Oxfordshire

Alongside this, these incredible young people supported the planning of The Oxfordshire Youth Awards which had to be postponed at the beginning of the pandemic and reimagined from an in-person awards ceremony to a virtual livestream event. Wednesday 28th of October 2020 was an incredible night that brought together young people and those who support them to celebrate achievements that are nothing short of remarkable.

The Oxfordshire Youth Awards and the ‘Are You Listening?’ podcast are two tangible examples of the endless hard work and time the youth committee have given and continue to give to ensure young people in Oxfordshire are heard and feel represented. We couldn’t be more proud of them, the community they are creating and their passion and enthusiasm for celebrating young people!
